Unfortunately, not as entertaining as the trailer suggested.

That sound of that beatboxing robot gets annoying pretty quickly. The "commando unit" regularly fires away at random for minutes at a time. A lack of tension and originality makes this film seem like it just won't end.

Here's the trailer again!

Mattei!! Finally!! Finally, he delivers a TOP film full of 80s fun. Long awaited.

I'm delving deeper into the depths of the Italian rip-off scene. You occasionally stumble across some really cool films there (2019: After the Fall of New York, go see it, people!). That's where I stumbled upon Robowar a while back. Interesting, I thought. And it turned out so! Robowar is a truly shameless Predator rip-off with a touch of Robocop. And HOW cool is the end result.

Finally, none of the usual drawbacks that bothered me with my previous Mattei movies: a slow pace and terribly unsympathetic characters. From the very first second, you're immersed in the action. The opening scene takes place on the island with the robot, and you don't leave it for the entire film. A wonderful pace, indeed. I was also pleasantly surprised by the characters. This time, the special forces aren't weirdos, but big, broad men with sinister faces and surprisingly funny one-liners.

The jungle vibe is fantastic, and every 10 minutes the squad is mowing down another forest with their machine guns. It's all accompanied by a thumping 80s track. The robot itself is fantastic. It's really nothing more than a guy in a motorcycle helmet, but it's entertaining. The only downside I can think of is that after an hour, it starts to get a bit stale because the really great characters have all but died, and you're basically left with Reb Brown, who's just a bit of a jerk.

Cool 80s film by Mattei. I still have a bunch of his films to watch, but I think I'll have a harder time enjoying myself than Robowar.

Edit: What do I see now? The man in the robot suit is Claudio Fragasso, the writer of this film and director of Troll 2 (1990).

Watched it on Blu-ray today!

Found it a bit of a disappointment, quite boring actually, a sort of man in a suit (Robocop-like) with a Predator sauce, a group of soldiers walking in a large forest / jungle just like in Predator.

Luckily, we also saw some good shooting and explosions when they passed a village with Viet Cong.

Furthermore, it was hunt the predator or run away...

At the end came the denouement, which was a bit disappointing.

This one isn't bad either, but I expected more.
