Naakt over de Schutting plot

Rick Lemming (Rijk de Gooyer) lives in the heart of Amsterdam, where he keeps pigeons and has rented a room to a teacher, Penny. His best friend is Ed Swaan, karate champion of the Netherlands and head over heels in love with the singer Lilly (Sylvia Kristel). Through Lilly, Ed comes in contact with a television director who persuades Rick and Penny to act in an 'art film'. Penny doesn't quite trust it and Rick investigates. He peeks in and sees a shadowy erotic movie thing that turns into a hefty brawl. Ed and Lilly escape naked over the fence.

This must be one of the most charming typical Dutch films. With a bit of influence from the giallo and the karate film, but then in the Dutch way. Also a great chase by tram. Rijk de Gooijer in the lead role (always nice!!). Also TiTa Tovenaar, the teaser, Emmanuelle, Frans Halsema, that girl from Ome Willem, Adéle Bloemendaal, Jerome Reehuis, the unfortunately never more successful brothers Sijses, Ko van Dijk in short, a bit of the entire Dutch film world in 1973. Subliminal advertising for Lois Jeans, Dam Chips, Randstad Uitzendbureau, Het Parool and Alka Seltzer. Not a lot of nudity, but full frontal (m/f).

Wonderful. The seventies. When life was still manageable. And everyone smoked. And cars still had a face. And I was still young. I enjoyed it. The story is rather trivial, and I didn't understand much of it, but oh well... Amsterdam was beautiful and the entire Dutch acting world passes by. Just think: Ko van Dijk, Ton Lensink, Jerome Reehuis, Sylvia Kristel, who even turns out to be able to sing, Adèle Bloemendaal, led by a (relatively) young Rijk de Gooyer. Enjoy.

Eye now shows a restored copy and that is beautiful, and a lot of work and time went into that. But I have seen an unrestored copy and I don't think there was much wrong with that.

Molly or Dolly?

Weisz had delivered a fine film with The Burglar (1972), so someone must have thought 'good job, do another one'. But in retrospect, that film turned out to be something of a stroke of luck.

Nevertheless, it is now a brilliant picture of the times, both of the Dutch entertainment industry and of Amsterdam before the city was completely ruined by the post-war wave of capitalism and mass tourism. The gambling hall gets away with it (because: those monkeys I still remember from that time). The crates in the bakery, the interplay of Glimmie and De Bonk, or whatever they are called in this part. The clumsy karate stuff with the ichi-ni-san. The tram chase. When Jennifer Willems sees her mother. How the brothers are eliminated.

That makes the smoky Brussels sprouts smell just bearable. But it is on the edge - it all seems nice, but in the end it is all just nostalgia. In that respect alone there could have been so much more. You can't blame Weisz for not realizing that 50 years later that would prove to be the only value of his film.
