Der Nachtmahr plot

Tina is 16 and seemingly has everything a young Berlin teenager wants: she's sexy, has cool friends and parents who grant her every wish. But every night she is plagued by a hideous creature. After a while, Tina overcomes her aversion and discovers herself through contact with the creature. Her friends and parents, on the other hand, think she's gone mad.

Pumping techno (Boys Noize, Oblast, Atari Teenage Riot..), neon and strobes, drugs and Berlin as the ultimate stage. As far as I'm concerned, this is the German Pop Skull. With a budget of €80,000 you can assume that not everything looks equally impressive, but I prefer a dozen enormous highlights to a film that compromises on achieving a more stable/consistent result. The editing is fantastic. Together with the soundtrack, sound design and lighting, the best of this year (and then we have The Neon Demon as a competitor...). I have rewinded the scene where he cuts to the club in an Easy Rider-like manner a number of times, goosebumps!

It also brings back many memories. Berlin was my introduction to underground music culture at the age of 16. Summer 2015 was my second visit; the love kept growing. Not necessarily for techno, but for the very impressive drug/club scene that exists there. I have never seen the essence of it all filmed so well. Akiz explains this on a subtly weird plot. The first encounter with that creature was a bit off, but Akiz has a plan that is becoming increasingly popular with the viewer. From the scene where she approaches, it all falls into place. The ending is the absolute highlight. Everything comes together here; beautifully lit, dope Oblast track (which can also be heard at the beginning), with a surreal, serene and melancholic tail. Masterpiece!

An important condition is a loving relationship with low budget cinema.

I have a cautious suspicion that the director's film portrays the superficial lifestyle of youth

wanted to expose. Beautiful images of the techno scene with pounding music in great contrast

with the fragile creature that turns the leading actress's world upside down. As if

an emptiness of nightlife is compensated by radical involvement.

Good, but with flaws.

Berlin, Techno, girls bursting with energy... My head is racing. I have been to Berlin four times, but what would really be THE moment in this city. I haven't been to enough clubs and now things are very tight financially. I didn't date a German rave bitch... But...

Der Nachtmahr seems to want to emphasize the beloved culture there and knows how to mix it with Spring Break-like elements (where possible), pounding techno and screaming Digital Hardcore from Atari Teenage Riot. But ultimately it also shows moments when it is very empty. The focus is on Tina, a Berlin teenager who gets carried away by her friends, but the mental problems are visible at home. The creature was used as a beautiful metaphor.

However, it seems to stop there a bit and the film does not really seem to promise what the title suggests.

Although much has been done about the emphasis and atmosphere, it wants to do little with the crucial themes. A little more horror perhaps? Or perhaps something more surreal? Now I actually felt like this was leaning more towards ET when we got to deal with Tina's alien alter ego. The scenes with her parents also seem to completely ignore the attempts and intentions to make a slick but dark film.

The family drama content with the necessary clichés is very high here.

And yes, the ending... Ultimately the attempt is nice, but it comes across as a bit loose.

Perhaps I have overlooked many things because the version I saw was missing subtitles and I had to brave the German language again.

Really could have done a lot more with it.

3.0*
