Minoes plot

"always listen to your felines"

Tibbe, a starting journalist at the Killendoornse Courant, is about to be fired. Actually, he's too shy to be a good journalist, but the editor-in-chief gives him another chance. While Tibbe ponders what he can write a good story about, he meets the curious Miss Minoes. She is said to have been a cat in the past, and she is indeed quite feline-like: she purrs, she cups, she prefers to sleep curled up in a box and can communicate with cats. Tibbe has his doubts about Miss Minoes at first, but when, thanks to her cat contacts, she helps him with the exclusive news that will help him keep his job, Tibbe decides to hire her as an assistant.

Okay.

Reminds a bit of Roald Dahl film adaptations, sometimes also a bit of the work of Jeunet (the scenes on the roofs - especially of La Cité des Enfants Perdus). But that is also the biggest limitation of this film, because although that link is quickly made, it often looks a bit cheap.

Sets are a bit meager, the camera work is fairly poor and the acting is also a bit lacking. Maassen is really not suitable for this kind of role, but the rest of the cast also clearly has trouble with the somewhat bold characters. Although it is ultimately for those cats with human voices that are really annoying.

A bit of a shame, because the set-up is quite charming and the film itself is also doable. Short, sweet and small, but in the end quite cozy. The ending may be corny, but it fits and feels good, which means the film does something good after all. It's a pity that the decoration is really a bit too poor.

2.5*

Movie that doesn't have too much.

Had seen this a while ago, but when this appeared in updates and I found out that I hadn't written anything on it I looked again and only to be able to write an honest piece about this cat movie.

Van Houten isn't very convincing, but in general this is better than what I see of her, especially because she exudes a little more charm here. But she continues to talk in the so-talk-nobody tone, although she has a bit of an excuse here because she's actually a cat (I think).

Some parts are nice, such as Van Houten on the roof, or the first meeting between Van Houten and Maassen in the tree. For the rest, the film is nowhere very funny and I didn't have to laugh much, so I focus more because the story is well thought out.

Maassen is nice and, as expected, radiates more than just about everyone. Then you have mentioned the most positive. Besides the sets, the camera work is quite boring and some dialogues are quite broken. 90 minutes didn't exactly go by very quickly. But you just have to deal with that.

Seen it again and it remains a charming children's film. I have never read or received the book, but the whole thing has an Annie MG Schmidt atmosphere. Carice van Houten in particular plays a strong role, because in all her behavior she really comes across as a cat, no matter how charming she looks as a young lady.

Furthermore, a whole look at well-known (voice) actors such as Pierre Bokma (who often plays a convincing antagonist), Plien and Bianca, Jack Wouterse, Hans Teeuwen, Wim T. Schippers and Paul Haenen. The voice roles are a bit distracting at times because the voices seem very familiar, especially if one of the cats sounds like Ernie and another like Margreet Dolman. There is also charm again, especially with Teeuwen as Casanova cat. Maassen is less appropriate, but is not a disturbing factor either.

Ultimately, sweet and fun, both the film and Van Houten. 3*.
