Journalist 'Stew' Smith meets the rich and beautiful Anne Schuyler while writing a story about a scandal involving her family. They fall for each other, but Stew eventually notices that he doesn't quite fit into her social life and starts hanging out more and more with his female colleague Gallagher.

A very nice film, but unfortunately it lacked the real Capra atmosphere. Fortunately, Williams and Young made up for a lot, even though the story was quite predictable. I found Jean Harlow incredibly disappointing; she is so ugly! Normally I think the women in Capra's films are okay, but this time that only applied to Young.
The film did have some very funny dialogue, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it a few times. For example, when they were writing that play that was actually about their own lives.

An early screwball comedy that shows Capra had not yet really found his footing as a director of such films at the time. His masterpieces, however, would soon follow. The film features two big names as leading ladies, Loretta Young and Jean Harlow. Without a doubt, however, it is *the* film of Robert Williams, thanks to a fine performance. Unfortunately, he did not get the chance to further his career, as he died suddenly a few days after the premiere of this film from complications of appendicitis.

A pleasant comedy from pre-code Hollywood that never gets boring thanks to the witty dialogue and great humor. I thought Robert Williams and Loretta Young gave particularly strong performances. Jean Harlow, on the other hand, didn't seem to stand out above the suit except for the platinum blonde look. Furthermore, I don't understand what she owes her legendary status to; she isn't someone I would turn my head for on the street.
Director Frank Capra and first cinematographer Joseph Walker do their job well. Beautiful shots and sequences regularly appear that add a little something extra (e.g., the kissing scene filmed behind a window where rainwater runs off).
The script is sufficiently developed to hold attention for an hour and a half.
Fun fact: director, cinematographer, and screenwriter Jo Swerling would also join forces 15 years later for the classic It's A Wonderful Life.
Platinum Blonde is an aging film, but the successful humor keeps it vibrant.
