Harry Kümel's debut film. And he shows class here. The choice for b&w was for budgetary reasons, but it only supports the melancholy atmosphere. Beautifully captured, beautiful photography. The story is based on a book by Filip Pillecyn from 1934. The film has a storyline with lesbian undertones. I wonder if that was also the case in the book in the Catholic 1930s. Furthermore, it contains quite a few actions that can also be explained or completed symbolically. It seems to me that Monsieur Hawarden's femininity is awakened by the contact and platonic relationship with the pure Axel. The prince who literally kisses her awake from her disguise. And after this liberation - and the death of her mother - she has found peace and can die in freedom.
