Shchors plot
1919. German troops withdraw from Ukraine. The Ukrainian rulers, led by Symon Petlyura, are retaking their position in Kiev. The Bolsheviks led by Mykola Shchers are on their way to Kiev, taking one Ukrainian city after another. But they lose Berdychiv. They get discouraged, but Shchers doesn't give up.

It's all well and good that Shtsjors without his sidekick Vasil Bozhenko it would have been boring. The moody Cossack is a real mood maker. When the bourgeoisie has gathered in a theater for a fundraiser, Bozhenko is prompted by a commissioner. He angrily shouts: "Stop this, I'm not an actor."
He says goodbye with a beautiful, pathetic, Ukrainian lament.
Shchors will eventually be liquidated on Trotsky's orders (obviously not in the film!).
