Acceptable but routine romantic drama in which a WWII soldier returns to his sweetheart and discovers that he has blown his savings with a reckless investment in a nightclub. Nick Blake [John Garfield] actually wants to put his questionable practices behind him from before the war, but a lack of money and a renewed acquaintance with Pop Gruber [Walter Brennan] tempt him to participate in a scam at the expense of a wealthy widow Gladys Halvorsen [Geraldine Fitzgerald]. But the blood flows where it can't go and Nick falls head over heels for his intended victim. Oops! John Garfield is always worth a look and there are enough interesting characters to keep things interesting. However, it is not very original.

Film noir with a touch of romance in which John Garfield takes on the role of a criminal with gingerbread heart. Geraldine Fitzgerald plays the female lead role as the direct object. In fact, I found the role of Faye Emerson more interesting, but the subplot with this lady was already played out after the intro of the film, serving as an introduction to the character of Garfield. Fitzgerald's character also seems a bit toonaiveto me to really keep it fun. I think she doesn't act badly, looks good and has a beautiful voice. And that's worth something too.
WR Burnett's screenplay is largely a dialogue-driven plot, which remains especially interesting before Fitzgerald discovers Garfield's true nature. Afterwards the tension drops, despite the finale with a modest shoot out.
The direction by Jean Negulesco and the camera work by Arthur Edeson are solid, without qualifying for a beauty prize.

Conclusion. Rather a mediocre film in which I especially enjoyed Garfields' performance. So I just added the rest.

great crime story with a dose of romance, Garfield is good with the ladies and uses that talent for his scams.

But when he falls in love with his intended next victim, he wants to get out, much to the dismay of some of his partners.

Garfield is a less well-known actor from the old days, but he is often very good at playing the hot-tempered bad boy with a golden heart.

I didn't know Geraldine Fitzgerald as an actress at all, but she has a beautiful appearance and also acts well here.

The rest of the supporting roles are also well filled with 2 that stand out, Doc and POP.
