Lee & Cindy C. plot

Lee decides to dedicate himself to a career in rock music. However, the musical qualities of his band members, also his childhood friends, are not exactly impressive. Fortunately, he gets support from his uncle Dolf, a third-rate clown with a drinking problem. Cindy C., a Flemish schlager singer, wants to give her career a new boost, but has a conscience problem. She no longer wants to lie and cheat in the world of showbiz. When Lee and Cindy meet by chance, they discover in each other a drive for integrity and truth. Sparks fly and the two, despite the world of difference and an age gap, fall in love. In order to get closer, they disown their own entourage, but ultimately also themselves, leading to an inevitable rift...

Stany Crets is used to making theater and it shows. We get a lot of overacting and a fairly brushed-off spoken language. The whole feels a bit unnatural at times. But in itself there is nothing wrong with the film that tells a predictable, but beautiful story. Ann Van Den Broeck is a renowned musical actress, which certainly comes in handy here. Unfortunately, the whole thing doesn't really stick, the film is a bit too good for that and the characters are too over the top.

Directorial debut by Stany Crets. Even his children join in and appear briefly with the fire torch. All in itself not super great, but I actually enjoyed myself with this romcom. Bert Verbeke is doing well and is a great protagonist. He immediately cashed in on his popularity after he became known and loved in the popular Flemish soap opera Thuis. The chemistry with Ann Van den Broeck is present and comes out well.

Not everything is funny, but there are some nice things in it. For example, Jaak Van Assche (“Should I show my hairy ass?”) or Rik Verheye (“Name a drummer?”) were fine in their supporting roles. A bit overacting in general and sometimes a bit bland, but so quite OK.

Perhaps a bit over the top with its morals, but showbiz and booklets sometimes tend to exaggerate or create things apart from authenticity. A film that revolves around sentiment and a feel good/happy ending. Well, I'm in a mild mood today, 3.0*!

Schoolteacher Lee [Bert Verbeke] dreams of a career as a rock musician, but is not on the same wavelength as his bandmates. During a hospital visit to his uncle [Jaak van Assche], Lee literally and figuratively bumps into the successful singers Cindy C [Ann van den Broeck]. Cindy took a break from her career a year ago for personal reasons. Inspired by her story, Lee writes a beautiful song that catches the interest of manager Roland [Nico Sturm], who persuades Lee to record the song as a duet with Cindy under the pseudonym Dave D. Lee and Cindy grow closer, until ... A good romantic drama (with a few strong songs by Steve Willaert), but the excellent work of Verbeke and Van den Broeck is largely ruined by sometimes downright childish jokes and other questionable attempts to humor.
