Soulless retelling of Agatha Christie's Ten Little Niggers...

No character development at all

so that the murders, which happen off-screen,

are nothing but a given that is presented to us in this autopilot.

The music accompaniment, a sort of italo bossa nova funk, I thought, despite the fact that it was shameless filler, sounded funky enough to appreciate it.

In my opinion the least Bava I have seen to date. The music does indeed sound good, but lacks the suspense and that is what this film needed.

Bava does not succeed in letting the mutual tensions between the island visitors get across. But that's not just because of the music: the acting isn't fantastic either.

What is still enjoyable? The atmospheric shots and close-ups that Bava lets pass here and there. With this he shows once again that he was a man who paid attention to the visual appearance.

The plot twists towards the end were still nice, but partly predictable.

More of a film for the Bava fanatics.

The plot is heavily inspired by the stories of Agatha Christie and Ten Little Indians in particular. Nevertheless, 5 Bambole per la luna d'agostoen is not a catchy film. It is mainly the unimaginative casts of the characters that irritate. Rich, greedy, frustrated, bored and decadent. Their fate is irrelevant to the viewer. The only thing you can look forward to is that they might be victims of a murder.

Not much joy can be derived from this either. Mario Bava is quite reserved in that regard. Rather than focus on the detective aspect and carry on with gritty killings, Bava opts for snobbish talk and nasty interactions between the snooty characters. Not interesting.

The murders happen en-passant and are no more than a comical running gag. The survivors don't care much. They quietly continue to drink their extravagant drinks and their arrogant chatter. It's not all that exciting.

It is only towards the end that the film rises somewhat from its dull rhythm, but that is far too late to intrigue. 5 Bambole per la luna d'agosto remains a boring event carried by annoying characters.

Annoying movie.
