In Nachtgestalten, ordinary people play the leading roles. People who have to work hard to keep their heads above water. People who have been scarred by life. Several stories are told in Nachtgestalten, running parallel and sometimes intersecting. The film tells of the homeless, older yuppies, immigrants, and punks, and does so raw and unvarnished.

Besides his characters, director and writer Andreas Dresen also focuses on the city of Berlin, the place where all the stories take place. Sparkling and gritty, he captures the charm of the city around the turn of the century. In that imposing city, the characters were round. And for once, these aren't handsome characters or successful characters suffering from luxuries. The film tells of the lives and living conditions of characters you'd rather not imagine yourself in. Drugs, prostitution, and poverty. These are the things the characters in this film encounter.

Empathizing with the characters is difficult. Yet, as the film progresses, something resembling sympathy emerges, but it could just as easily be pity. The actors who portray the characters do admirably well, without exception. The characters feel authentic. The dialogue is raw and intense. Nachtgestalten depicts depressing situations but isn't entirely somber. At times, the film is funny or simply moving because, amidst the misery, beautiful human qualities also shine through.

Nachtgestalten is a film that shows the viewer the unruliness of Berlin. A city where miracles happen. A city where both ugliness and beauty flourish. Beautiful and intriguing, visible in the visuals and the characters. A fine film.
