Troma always makes you think of extremely stupid movies with tons of gore. With Blades, only the former is true, because this comedy is remarkably tame. It can hardly be called a horror; it's essentially a parody of Jaws. Just replace the ocean with a golf course and the shark with a lawnmower. The premise and structure are practically the same, and the filmmakers constantly try to recreate scenes from Jaws, even when it makes no sense. As a result, the film frequently takes on an Airplane!-esque vibe—only much less funny. Gore is almost nonexistent, and the film is noticeably slow; everything feels rather drawn out. A film like this is most enjoyable when it's 70 to 80 minutes long, so over an hour and a half is far too much. For a while, this nonsense is fine, and especially around the climax, there's enough ridiculous material to be laughed at. But it could have been much more enjoyable with better timing and more extreme gore, especially if it had been 20 minutes shorter. In that respect, they could have used those sharp lawnmower blades in the editing room.

2 stars.
