I can pass.

Interesting but tame drama. Interesting, because I had no idea beforehand that this youth movement existed. In itself that is not surprising, as a counter-movement to the Hitler Youth. Cinematically it is all a bit simple and the drama does not color outside the lines, although for example that suicide is a bit more daring in a film that otherwise seems mainly suitable to show to 13-year-old high school students during history class. Robert Sean Leonard and Christian Bale are the familiar faces on duty, but I can't say that I am impressed by them.

2.5

After some really bad reviews I went in with the feeling that I was going to see a really bad movie, but that was not the case at all! Yes, there were a few clichés and a failed attempt at a plot twist (you see Peter go overboard with Nazi sympathy, but it turns out to be Thomas who goes overboard and Peter remains a Swing Kid), but more than enough was done well.
The film never gets too rough, the abuse remains at a bit of a brawl, while sometimes there is an atmosphere that something very intense is going to happen. Even the invasion at the end is a bit on the tame side.
Speaking of the ending, I didn't think the film was finished at all. The little brother who kept shouting "Swing Heil" a bit too much and Thomas who shouted it again for good measure was just not a decent ending. I would have liked to see a small ending with Peter in the penal/labor camp, that would have been a great ending. Especially if he, like his father before him, had come home disillusioned and Peter had died somewhere on a front. But unfortunately, that's not how it ended.
All in all a good film with a different view and side of (the run-up to) WWII.
The only real downside I found was that it all felt too English and I kept having to think "No, it represents Germany, not England!".
Also a small negative point for the part that they suspected that the ex-Swing Kid who was with the HJ could be there according to them, so that he could then report where all the Swing parties were held, while they were actually always in the Bismark Club.
