Ida Lupino, yes. A very good actress, especially in the 40s, but nowadays she is mainly known because she was the only female director in Hollywood in the 50s. Fortunately, the films are also considered good. This is the first one I see and it is easy to appreciate.

It is above all a very skillfully made thriller. Good tension, excellently told story, interesting premise, smooth, no unnecessary fat, well acted. In fact, The Hitch-Hiker does not really excel in anything. It is a fairly typical genre film for its time that has no further pretensions beyond delivering simple, short entertainment. No scene really stands out and cinematically it is more skillful than inspired. Nevertheless, there is something to be said for this kind of film. Although I have no problem with long lengths, it is sometimes very nice to have pure genre works without bells and whistles like this. It also helps that Ida Lupino does not drop stitches: despite the low budget, there are no bad moments or elements in it.

3.5*

Nice! A pretty grim thriller, in which two men give a lift to the fugitive criminal Emmett Myers - and of course they shouldn't have done that. Emmett Myers is very strongly portrayed by William Talman as a reckless, dangerous killer, and the rest of the cast does a great job as well. In terms of story, the film is straightforward, we see how Emmett keeps the men under control with intimidation and psychological games, and how the police also tries to track Emmett down. The images of a desert-like Mexico are fine, but the film is mainly made by the intimidating atmosphere that Talman creates. What a boss.

Beautiful and captivating film that optimally exploits a simple premise, thanks in part to the excellent Talman as a one-eyed psychopath who keeps an eye on you even in his sleep! The killer at large terrorizes two friends who have to bring him safely to a Mexican port city in their car. Since off-road is the safest for the brutal murderer, we get beautiful images of the desert landscape there as a bonus. All in all, Lupino has delivered a fine film, and indeed that running time is wonderful!
