Pretty entertaining 'western parody'. Bob Hope is great as the comedic dentist, but Jane Russell is also indispensable. The comic note was perhaps a bit too much here and there, but I was in a nice mood so that worked out nicely. Hope and Russell make a nice couple and know how to get the most out of it, because it could never have been a real top film.

The paleface concludes Bob Hope's first decade in Hollywood, providing a fine compendium of all the gags and humorous traits that made up his comedic persona. So here we have Bob who is always cowardly, Bob who thinks highly of himself as Casanova, Bob who is actually incapable (his dentist's handbook!), Bob who can't keep his mouth shut, Bob who tightens his bow tie before a beautiful lady, Bob who always pretends to be tougher than he is, Bob who just can't manage to consummate his marriage, Bob who makes bold plans but immediately gets cold feet, Bob who fails to remain unperturbed when a sultry lady snuggles around him, Bob who growls like a wild dog to impress, and of course Bob who always has a witty answer ready ("You've got the courage of a lion!" – "Oh, that's nothing. Brave men run in my family!"). Anyone who has ever seen a Bob Hope movie will recognize most (if not all) of his default character's attributes; nothing wrong with that, but you can imagine that even the most die-hard fan has seen it at some point. As such, The paleface can immediately be regarded as the ultimate Bob Hope film, because as said, everything comes together in this film. And all that clearly falls on his shoulders, because Jane Russell shows no acting talent here, neither comic nor dramatic, and the close-up in which she looks at Bob languidly before he (finally) likes her kissing is really cringeworthy. Fortunately, the recordings are beautiful (my Universal-DVD delivers beautiful colors), the production has not been skimped on, the pace is high and there is a nice Stagecoach finale (if we don't mind). to those countless shot Indians). Funny little piece : the consummation of the marriage between Jane and Potter where we only see their hands.

Typical Bob Hope movie but with that fun entertainment! All the ingredients were there, nice one-liners, plenty of slapstick and a very attractive and tough Jane Russell. You already know in advance that the plot has little to do with it, which at the same time makes it a perfect film for later in the evening / night. Clearly also a film that was made with great pleasure, a positive atmosphere throughout the film and atmospheric film sets.

3*
