Ekskursante plot
"Love and belief do wonders."
After World War II, Lithuania is on the eastern side of the Iron Curtain. The country is taken away from its own identity and any form of resistance is brutally crushed by Stalin. Hundreds of thousands of Lithuanians are deported to gulags in the Soviet Union. Eleven-year-old orphaned girl Marija manages to escape from a transport to such a camp, and embarks on a 6,000-kilometer and dangerous journey back to her homeland, posing as a Russian.
