Argh.

The new Ju-on is clearly too much. The previous one was an origin story, which was still quite doable, but this one is chronologically at the very end of the series. This means that you not only have to deal with a story cut into pieces (Ju-on trademark setup), but also 7 films for this. The film not only refers to itself, but also regularly to older parts.

For a series that has been running for 18 years and actually has very little to offer in terms of story, not a very good choice. Anyone who is completely into Ju-on will be able to follow it all, but to me it seemed like a lot of separate scenes where the various Ju-on characters (Toshio and Kayako in particular) are allowed to do their thing again.

But that too has become a bit stale. Toshio standing everywhere and opening his mouth, Kayako crawling down a flight of stairs... the sad thing is that Ochiai doesn't add anything else. As if nothing has changed in those 18 years.

Oh no, it was quite a tough one. Towards the end there are a few scenes that are slightly more exciting and the story becomes a little less confusing when you can tie the individual parts together a bit in the beginning, but it has very little to do with a good, successful horror. They mainly try to focus on the story and the mutual relationships, which is not exactly the strength of this film series.

Hopefully it really is The Final now.

1.5*

With the previous part, director Masayuki Ochiai gave the viewer an origin story, this time he plans the event at the very end of the series. However, the stylization of this film is surprisingly much more detailed, which makes it all look more atmospheric. To me it gave the impression that this was being handled by a completely different director, but at least it provides some visually appealing horror moments. It's a pity that the content itself is not very interesting, with substandard acting and a slowly moving story. In any case, the horror side makes way for more plot, but it doesn't work at all. The progression leaves a rather tough impression and the film only revives when the threats themselves come into view. A truly spectacular finale doesn't exactly have a whole called "The Final Curse", so I don't see the added value of this film addition. These films still include the separate structure in terms of chronology, but it is worked out very messily here.
