A war film of Italian origin, which tries to combine the First World War with a touch of humor. That is somewhat reminiscent of Roberto Benigni, who did something similar in La Vita È Bella, but then with the Second World War. Fortunately La Grande Guerra is of a better level and the satirical humor works much better here.

La Grande Guerra is certainly an anti-war film, which clearly shows that the Italians at the time did not see the point in fighting in the First World War. The two men, who play the leading roles in this, are central to this. In sometimes quite comical ways, they do their utmost to avoid having to fight at the front line. In between, it is realistically sketched how cruel the war was for the Italian soldiers at the time. The way in which Italy treated the soldiers at the time is also heavily criticized. The camera work is strong and Monicelli makes it an extremely raw and realistic film, which is occasionally provided with some air by the humor, which is more than welcome. It ensures that the drama does not become too heavy and somehow the drama also works a bit better.

I found it an extremely fascinating war film, in which all aspects that characterize wars are well presented. Strong and at times quite raw, which deserves to be seen by more people, because it is certainly worth watching.

Classically constructed war film: soldiers who get to know each other, usually unaware of the real horror of war, have different views on it and are then thrown straight into the fire.

This time, however, it is not told from the position of some platoon of heroes, but from the point of view of two cowards.

An anti-war film with depiction of war violence, as it was tolerated in the years, but no less penetrating, denouncing the madness of the event. Satirical and critical.

An interesting film, but it remains a bit thin on the sidelines here.
