Voicemails for Isabelle plot

"Sometimes the universe leaves you a message."

Jill is an aspiring pastry chef trying to cope with the death of her younger sister, Isabelle, by continuing to leave voicemails for her. But when Isabelle's phone number is assigned to the enigmatic real estate agent, Wes, things get a bit complicated. Wes hears Jill complain about her demanding boss, Chef Bastien, tell horror stories about dating, and regret her endless search for a breakfast taco in San Francisco. Meanwhile, he falls in love with her, without ever having seen her.

A nice film about a young woman who continues recording voicemails after her younger sister passes away. A fine setup for a rom-com like this, which focuses a bit more on the romance than the comedy. Nothing groundbreaking, but it is easy to watch. Zoey Deutch and Nick Robinson do a great job together and the film has a nice soundtrack.

Predictable in every way, which means these kinds of films are always dependent on the cast. And in this case, with Zoey Deutch in the lead role, that is not a problem at all. She carries the film with panache.

The idea is quite nice, but ultimately all the clichés return, from the entire build-up (with a dramatic diparound 2/3 of the film where it seems completely over) to many small moments. For me, it would have been much more fun if that Wes had listened to those messages for a long time and, after observing it for a long time, confessed it. But no, he says nothing, and that could nicely lead to a major drama (so around 2/3 of the film). Deutch certainly shines on screen, but the film really has too little to say for nearly 120 minutes. 2.5*.
