Two strangers bump into each other in New York on the only night singles are allowed to have sex. A decent film in which sex between unmarried people is allowed only one day a year. A sort of rom-com version of The Purge. A bit fragmented at the beginning and repetitive at times, but enough happens and there are quite a few laughs here and there. However, more could have been made of this premise, as it all remains rather superficial. There are a few nice cameos, though. A solid 3.0 stars.

A film with an interesting premise that unfortunately chooses to be a simple rom-com that mainly tries to be fun but offers no surprises and treads all the safe paths. That is a shame. In any case, I didn't find that world entirely believable, and the film never really manages to show how people can accept it like that. The whole cheerfulness surrounding that one evening clashes too much with the entire legal system. Barbaro is otherwise fine; I find Turner just slightly less convincing – with him, you see too much of an actor at work. The many supporting roles are enjoyable, and the film is varied enough and often looks reasonably atmospheric.
I do wonder what the message actually is. This filmmaker doesn't strike me, given his oeuvre, as someone who is very conservative, but the fact that Barbaro and Turner still want to wait a year for sex at the end suggests that he actually thinks people are too casual about sex these days? 2.5*.

A film set in a society where it is forbidden for unmarried people to have sex. Not entirely forbidden, because once a year the unmarried are allowed to let loose completely. A premise that is as original as it is ridiculous. Also a premise without much added value, as the film turns out to be a simple, classic romantic comedy that follows the beaten path of the average romantic comedy.
Precisely because the premise sounds rather ridiculous, I expected the peculiar law prohibiting sex between unmarried people to be heavily ridiculed. After all, oppression, an infringement on free will, or an authoritarian state are elements that lend themselves to humor. But no. Director Will Gluck (Friends with Benefits (2011), Easy A (2010)) sketches the premise superficially and pays barely any further substantive attention to it. Will Gluck does not want to tire the viewer with wit and profundity, preferring instead to direct a simple romantic comedy. And he has succeeded admirably.
The events aren't particularly funny. The storyline, however, is very predictable. The characters Owen (Callum Turner) and Allie (Monica Barbaro) are both unmarried and run into each other multiple times on that fateful night. The seasoned romantic comedy viewer already knows where the series of hopeless encounters will eventually lead. One Night Only offers no surprising plot twist, and the interactions between the two don't really result in any very funny events. Nevertheless, the film is not unpleasant to watch. This is mainly thanks to both lead roles, which are amusingly portrayed, and thanks to a few amusing supporting roles. Finally, the New York setting serves as a pleasant backdrop to the story.
