A very beautiful documentary about the fantastic gorilla, narrated by the nearly 100-year-old David Attenborough, as only he can. I do agree with Humo in their review that, with many animals, we are too quick to look for human motives and emotions behind their behavior.

And this is naturally a success story, not to mention Dian Fossey. But most stories about the animals on this earth are not as successful, yet it remains a fascinating documentary that is certainly worth watching...

A beautiful documentary about these wondrous animals. The close-ups of their faces, with their almost human expressions, are fascinating. However, there was a lot of commentary along the lines of: “Gorilla Ubwuzu befriended Ubi—exactly the kind of friendship he needed at that moment in his life.” Or: “She will never get over the death of her baby for the rest of her life.” Such interpretations, intended to add a bit of extra drama to the whole thing. Also, when you see, for example, a gorilla being pushed into the bushes, it is immediately turned into a full-blown power struggle, complete with alleged proponents and opponents. That bothered me a little bit at times, or raised the question—is that really the case? But all in all, still a beautiful documentary.

A beautiful documentary in which David Attenborough tells the extraordinary story of his first encounter with the young gorilla Pablo, sometime in the 1970s. He grew into a mighty silverback who later led his own group, which still exists today. Beautiful footage from then and now, with Attenborough's still powerful voice as a guide. Given his age (100 in May!), he can no longer be present on location, but the commentary from his living room (?) is a pleasant alternative.
