Mediocre war film. The story isn't particularly special. The execution is somewhat clichéd and very predictable, meaning the film never really becomes exciting. The action scenes look polished but aren't very spectacular or original and feel like coincidences hanging together. Visually, the film is reasonably successful with fine set design, and everyone speaks their own language. Eastwood remains a somewhat questionable actor but generally delivers a satisfactory performance. 2.5/3.0

I had quite high expectations for this war film, but it didn't live up to them. Hanks had too small a role to even be mentioned, and Eastwood pulled the face of his father in the Westerns for almost two hours. I struggled a bit with his acting. Not great at the beginning, and it improved somewhat later, but overall (yet) not a standout.
The fact that his life depended on the Motorola radio doesn't really come across either. The only thing he heard on the radio is that he couldn't be helped and that he was on his own. He was more the transmitter than the one receiving information. Now, I don't know if this was the case 'in real life', but I think the script in this film didn't handle this well.
Apart from that, the film's production design was fine, and the action scenes weren't bad either... but the film never really grabs you, leaving you with a 'glass half empty' feeling.
