Heilig Schuim plot

Former fugitive brewer John Christian Kavakure returns to conflict-ridden Burundi to pursue his old dream: a brewery that makes the Burundians independent of multinational Heineken. With local banana beer, according to a special recipe from John's grandmother.

In the early 1990s, John-Christian Kavakure managed to flee from Burundi to Belgium with the help of a Belgian missionary. There, he threw himself into his passion for brewing and grew into a well-known, respected brewer. Years later, he returned to set up a brewery, but this was politically so sensitive that he had to flee again in 2013. Blom and Wessel follow Kavakure on his second return to his native soil and his brewery, which he hopes to breathe new life into. It provides a good picture of the socio-economic and political differences between Burundi and Belgium, but also tackles persistent prejudices. In any case, afterwards I felt like tasting a bottle of Soma.
