The Grieving plot

The talent of the Italian directing trio Alessandro Antonaci, Daniel Lascar, and Stefano Mandalà is undeniable, but their next project, The Grieving, borrows too obviously from Insidious. The sharp visual style is sometimes adopted almost flawlessly, only without the timing, the metal tape, and the dedication of James Wan. That does not detract from the fact that it all looks atmospheric and intriguing enough, combined with a number of suspensefully constructed scenes and a captivating finale. The acting isn't particularly special and the build-up is too long, but it provides solid entertainment. Horror fans will find little new under the sun here, but there are many worse contenders in this world.
