Apparently, Backrooms is a thing or something. In any case, I went into the theater unaware. What I saw was mostly just another horror movie that relies on jumpscares and camerawork that shows little for suspense and people entering certain rooms alone. Visually cool, though, and certainly very nice at times in terms of photography, with fine use of zoomed-in shots that create a particularly creepy atmosphere from very normal things (especially many of those panoramas).

However, the film offers little that is new and is a bit too much of a repetition for an hour (in fact, you get to see the same thing four times), with the pacing not exactly helping either. The last half hour is a bit strange, but at least more enjoyable to watch.

And what was this? No idea. Probably something about childhood traumas or maybe a metaphor for your brain. But that question didn't really interest me. 2.0*.

Furniture salesman Clark [Chiwetel Ejiofor] is in therapy with Mary [Renate Reinsve] to process the end of his marriage. When he discovers that his shop has an invisible door leading to a seemingly endless maze of back rooms, he asks employees Kat [Lukita Maxwel] and Bobby [Finn Bennett] to prove to Mary that he isn't imagining it. When he subsequently fails to respond, Mary sets out to investigate herself. Based on Parsons' popular, analog-filmed YouTube series. The sets and makeup create an oppressive atmosphere, but the story is muddled, the characters are underdeveloped, and Parsons' excessive use of suspense music suggests that screenwriter Will Soodik failed to develop the original concept into an equally effective feature film.

A very entertaining film that, in retrospect, I find slightly less good than I thought while watching. You constantly wonder how it all fits together, but you don't really find out. Of course, that isn't necessary, but the not knowing should add something. Here, I felt it was a sign of weakness. It was mostly form and little substance.

I am quite susceptible to this type of tension, the idea that a monster could be lurking around every corner. That is fun for quite a while, but here, about half the film consisted of wandering around and suspense. The fact that the film is based on a web series explains a lot. The form came first; the story had to be conceived later. That was done somewhat half-heartedly.

I understood that sequels are planned. They are supposed to shed more light on this film and ultimately get to the heart of what we are actually watching. I don't think I'll watch those sequels, but I will read the summaries. I am that curious.

The film reminded me strongly of Cube (Film, 1997) - MovieMeter.nl. I thought that one was very good at the time. No idea if it actually was. I was still young. And I also thought of Shinboru (Film, 2009) - MovieMeter.nl. That one was a lot funnier.
