The Finishing Line is a controversial educational film aimed at children, directed by John Krish for British Transport Films, an organization that produces all sorts of documentaries about the British transport sector, including the British railways. The 20-minute film unfolds inside the mind of a boy who imagines a kind of Olympics consisting of dangerous games that can be played on and off the tracks.
The film pulls no punches. It's bloody and brutal. Countless injuries and deaths occur. The tender souls of children are not spared. Children are mercilessly taught not to play near the train tracks. At school screenings, children were certainly impressed. Some even fainted. When the film was shown on television, it caused such a commotion that its screening was banned for 20 years.
The film features approximately 300 children and only a few adults. The competitive games are brutal and bloodthirsty in nature, but also darkly humorous in tone. The film wraps a serious message in horrific imagery and adds a touch of dark humor in a typically British way. The film has no real story or dialogue and is suspenseful. The Finishing Line is an interesting and enjoyable short film. I can easily imagine that the film was considered less suitable as an educational film for children, and that many a tender child's soul felt a severe blow while watching it.
