Orphaned girl Ella lives with her stepmother who only cares about her own two daughters. Ella has to do all the housework. She never shows her feelings, but she dreams of living in the king's palace. An encounter with the palace cook invites her to a ball. The prince falls in love with her and goes looking for her after the party.

Definitely a version worth watching, the story is a lot less extreme in the sense that the stepsisters are unsympathetic but not as mean as in the animated version.
Here we see Cinderella simply walking around the village and she is not portrayed as a girl held captive by her wicked stepmother and her daughters.
I also find it strong in terms of the story that the prince gets to know her privately days before the ball and thus builds a bond with her, it makes the story about their love a lot stronger and emotionally deeper.
