Play Dead is low-budget, surprisingly suspenseful, and atmospheric. Most of the film takes place in a basement, a frequently used and beloved setting in horror films. Such a place is wonderful. Dark, confusing, and cut off from the outside world. Perfectly suited to telling a dark story. In Play Dead, that story is the story of a woman who awakens in a dark basement surrounded by the corpses of countless women. And yes, just try escaping from that.

The film plays it straight. The danger is well-known. There's no unknown paranormal phenomenon lurking in the shadows, ready to strike at any moment. The danger lies in a murderous antagonist with a repulsive aura who collects dead women in his basement. No mystery there. The script that works with that information offers little variety. This is especially problematic when the situation is clear and the setting is almost entirely confined to a basement. The film's running time seems to have been adapted to this scenario. Play Dead is therefore a compact film that doesn't drag things out unnecessarily.

The screenplay provides a few minor plot twists that maintain the suspense. And that's it. At least for the most part, because at the end, the setting changes and the film reveals more about the mystery behind the antagonist's collecting mania. This piece, too, is staged without unnecessary frills and fits comfortably into the remaining running time. Once again, the director succeeds brilliantly in maintaining the suspense.

Play Dead is an atmospheric horror film that, with minimal resources and in a short time, manages to create a delightfully grimy atmosphere and tell a gripping story. A great film.
