Champagne plot

When Maarten learns that his father, Hans, is terminally ill, he decides to take him to the Champagne region. The highlight of the trip is the little train that rides through the wine cellars of Epernay. For Hans, who loves to enjoy a drink, a destination that feels like a journey to heaven. Maarten's wife, Loes, and his mother, Sophie, wave the two men goodbye. They depart in high spirits, only to discover after two blocks that they are probably the least suitable father and son ever for this bonding trip.

After Maarten [Leo Alkemade] learns that his father Hans [Huub Stapel] has cancer, he follows the advice of a friend [Guus Meeuwis]. An extensive examination is scheduled in two weeks; Maarten persuades Hans to use that period for a trip through France, where Hans' love for champagne takes center stage. Rik van de Bos wrote the screenplay with Alkemade, who drew inspiration from his experiences with his own father. As a humorous portrait of a father-son relationship, this is highly successful. Whenever sentimentality is lurking, Kamps resorts to every cliché (slow motion, sad glances, mournful piano melodies, atmospheric pop music) to get the tissues out.

Good film about a man taking one last vacation with his father to the Champagne region. An easy-to-watch road movie with plenty of laughs and a few tears. The father-son relationship is portrayed credibly here, and Leo Alkemade and Huub Stapel have great chemistry. The film certainly doesn't drag on too long. Just under 3.5 stars.

Already the surprise of the year. I panned Tim Kamps' Telefilm quite a bit, and Leo Alkemade isn't exactly a great actor either. But anyway, the trailer promised a pretty okay film, and ultimately this is an excellent film that strikes a chord. At least with me. I am a bit younger than Alkemade but also have a father who is over 70, and I recognized quite a bit in the relationship (my father is also a hard talker), but especially in the traveling together: last year I went to the US with him for three weeks and that was wonderful.

What the film does particularly well is the tone, which is very subdued and serious without becoming heavy. The film was written by Alkemade as a tribute, and you notice that in everything. Alkemade having a drink with his buddy (Guus Meeuwis) feels just like how friends interact with each other, but also how Alkemade interacts with his parents. And when Stapel lets out a laugh, it is genuine; the chemistry between Stapel and Alkemade is excellent in any case. Occasionally, the film misses the mark, such as the slapstick at the Reims Cathedral or at the toll booth, but often enough this remains subtle and therefore fun, for example during the coffee break along the highway. The ending wraps it up. 4.0*.
