On August 20, 2023, the Santa Clara-Ivins Police Department in Utah responded to a malnourished, abused young man who was going door to door asking for food and water. He was one of the six children of Ruby Franke, who, for a long time, ran a successful YouTube channel with her husband, Kevin, documenting their family life with six children. The boy had escaped from the home of Jodi Hildebrant, a "life coach" who was a close friend of the Franke family. All the key players in the subsequent investigation contributed to this documentary. This included people who joined "ConeXions Classroom," an initiative Ruby and Jodi launched to resolve relationship problems. Borgman even gained access to recordings of phone calls Ruby and Jodi made from jail and footage of their arrest and interrogation. Evil Influencer: The Jodi Hildebrandt Story seems primarily intended to prove that you can make a perfectly good documentary with enough archive footage without offering a single new insight. Everything presented here was already convincingly and more comprehensively covered in Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke. But apparently, the filmmakers felt that repackaging known information also counts as "new material."
What you get is a stretched-out summary of facts that the internet, Reddit, and Devil in the Family spewed out months ago. No new perspectives, no depth, no journalism, just noise.
