Violence in gesture, never in danger. With a hero who almost always wins and is never really in danger, you get, just like here, a fairly boring action movie. The action itself is actually quite well filmed, especially when Joe is thrashing around in fights, but as soon as he swaps his fists for guns, it’s yawn-inducing, like that uninspired finale. The romantic interludes with that annoying Latina girl didn't improve things either. It reminded me of a sort of action and martial arts version of Mr. Majestyk with Bronson. I didn't think it was all that cool. It was nice to see JCVD's son as one of the baddies for a change, though.

A decent action movie within the genre. The story isn't particularly special, but that is acceptable within this genre. The execution is inconsistent but generally adequate. The pace is good and the film is easy to watch. The first part of the film is the best, with excellent action scenes that are well-filmed and showcase Foster's martial arts skills effectively. Towards the end, they go completely wild and it all becomes quite unbelievable, which detracts from the suspense. The acting could be better. But within the 'brainless action' genre, it is a fine film that certainly references genre counterparts from the 80s and 90s. 3.0
