The fact that the film was made by a multimedia artist made me hopeful that it would look interesting in an artistic sense, but that was a vain hope: we see practically nothing but an old woman working in her enormous vegetable garden while she talks about her life, but mainly about the garden itself. Besides fruit and vegetables, she also collects other items, writing down what they are with duct tape. None of it is interesting. At the end, she tells the filmmaker, who is her niece, that she resembles her grandmother, who was also so creative and could make something out of nothing, but I actually couldn't discover what she made of the 'nothing' (the chores shown in and around the house). The film might be nice for people who have a vegetable garden themselves, or perhaps a life like that of the old woman resonates with women in general due to a deep feminine instinct, just as when humans were still hunter-gatherers—the man hunted and the woman gathered. But nothing resonated with me, and I was particularly glad when the film was over.

Over a period of five years, Amalie Atkins portrayed her aunt Agatha, who lives a self-sufficient life on a plot far outside the city where she has an apartment. As a blend of Klazien uit Zalk and Rob 'Eigen Tuin' Verlinden, she shows and tells how she protects her harvest against natural enemies using household remedies. In between, she lifts a corner of the veil regarding her family history, but clearly does so with some reluctance. Agatha and her lifestyle arouse interest and admiration, and Atkins amusingly uses her experience as a visual artist to make it visually more interesting. Due to the lack of personal depth, interest wanes after just an hour.

Amalie Atkins is making a documentary about her old aunt Agatha Bock, who maintains a vegetable garden on the old family farm somewhere near Winnipeg. It is a kind of quiet summer evening reflection on living in and with the seasons, and on aging and such. I am not that into gardening (that constant bending over! I got back pain and black snow just from watching it), nor do I care for that kind of emphasis on the little things in life. It wasn't my choice, then, but that of a friend who prefers that sort of thing. He was also much more charmed by that oatmeal documentary from last year. It also resembled that Dutch documentary hit from a few years ago, It Has Been a Beautiful Day. (Okay, that turns out to be from 1993, so stick to a somewhat broad definition of 'a few years ago'.)
It did look beautiful in flashes, with a lot of golden hour summer light on what looked like 16mm film, but that was probably well replicated on digital video; IMDb has no technical info.
