In Ukraine, keeping schools open is an attempt to preserve some semblance of pre-war normal life—before February 24, 2022, and in some regions even before 2014. Without interviews or voiceovers, we get a glimpse into how the war affects the daily lives of students and teachers, and how schools continue to function in difficult times, close to the front or further afield, while danger constantly looms.

Over a period of more than a year, Gomostai documented the school life of children and young people in Ukraine. She visits cities near the front, as well as those located more than 100 kilometers away. Liberated cities are also featured. There's no narrative, only a common thread. The back-and-forth between locations reinforces the lack of structure, making this no more than a compilation with a few enjoyable moments. For those who haven't experienced war, the scenes during an air raid siren and in the bomb shelters are particularly interesting. With a running time of just over two hours, it's far too long.
