Onkel Jens plot

Kham, a young literature teacher, lives a comfortable life in Oslo until his estranged uncle from Iranian Kurdistan arrives unannounced. Despite the limited space in his shared apartment with friends, Kham feels obligated to invite his uncle to stay for a few days. However, his uncle quickly settles in and shows no signs of leaving anytime soon. Torn between his sense of family duty and the growing tension in the apartment, Akam begins to suspect there's more to his uncle's visit than just a casual visit.

When Akam, a well-integrated literature teacher in Oslo, receives an unexpected visit from his uncle from the Iranian part of Kurdistan, it leads to mildly conflictual and, above all, comical situations. A culture clash ensues with Akam and his fellow residents on one side, and the uncle on the other. However, due to his uncle's presence, Akam is increasingly confronted with his Kurdish roots. In the film, this is reflected, among other things, in Akam's mastery of the Kurdish language, which improves for him throughout the course of the film.

Director and writer Brwa Vahabpour draws inspiration for his film from experiences in his own life. Besides being a film that depicts a culture clash, it also addresses flight and (illegal) immigration. Serious matters that are given a lighthearted touch through the use of comedy. The good script, the supporting music, and the strong acting ensure that the lightheartedness does not go overboard. There is always an awareness that seriousness lies beneath the lightheartedness.

Thanks to sufficient plot twists, the story remains consistently interesting to follow. Besides the small and large surprises included in the story, the film also intrigues due to its likeable yet headstrong characters and their interactions, with the bond between Akam and his uncle being the most important and captivating, and therefore receiving the most attention.

Uncle Jens is a small film that presents a small and endearing story and touches upon a number of major international themes with this miniature on a small scale. An entertaining comedy with heart, fine humor, and a serious undertone that isn't even always noticeable. A lovely little film.
