The Family McMullen plot

Barry McMullen, now in his fifties, experiences his love life in a way similar to that of his young adult children. A good film about a man whose brother and two adult children return home. An unexpected sequel after 30 years. This film is much more polished and introduces a new generation. Nothing new under the sun, but an entertaining film with excellent dialogue and fun, romantic developments.

The Family McMullen is apparently the sequel to The Brothers McMullen (1995). A film with some of the same characters and the same director and writer, Edward Burns. Unfortunately, I only read this after The Family McMullen. I would have liked to see the earlier film first. It's not strictly necessary to be able to follow this film, but there are some things that go back in time. Things that aren't all explained to the viewer in the new film. Fortunately, thanks to the introduction of new characters with their own histories, the older histories carry less weight, and prior knowledge isn't essential.

The Family McMullen focuses heavily on the characters and their relationships. These relationships are difficult. Old wounds and conflicts underlie them. During a family Thanksgiving dinner, resentment flares up and meanders into the new year. The resentment isn't truly insurmountable, however. It's more a matter of annoyances bubbling up than bitter arguments. The film's tone is also not bitter. It's reasonably friendly, conciliatory, and occasionally a bit biting. Underneath, there's almost always a pleasant layer of humor.

There's no major drama. The drama unfolds largely in silence and restraint. Nor are there any major themes that arise. Rather, they're personal matters. Recognizable things like love, loneliness, the desire for recognition, and concern for the well-being of loved ones. All themes with which the viewer can easily identify. The Family McMullen is therefore a pleasant tragicomedy that treats its characters kindly and depicts situations with which the viewer can easily empathize. The Family McMullen is an easy-to-watch snack.
