Janis Ian: Breaking Silence plot

As a teenager, she sang about themes others remained silent about: American singer-songwriter Janis Ian. In this documentary, the singer tells her life story with humor and candor. A musical journey of a strong woman who is straightforward, always remains true to herself, and to this day continues to raise her voice against injustice. "Music is about serving something bigger than yourself, about telling stories. And these are mine."

I have no interest in Janis Ian or her music, but this is a fine documentary, just the way I like them: the film shows the highs and lows of Janis's life and career, interspersed with authentic footage and the requisite talking heads. And, of course, there's plenty of praise for Janis's person and music, but that's just part of it, since such a documentary is always a kind of hagiography.

"Fly Too High" (1979) was Janis Ian's only major hit in the Netherlands. She had already made a name for herself in the US in 1967 with "Society's Child," a song about an interracial relationship that the then 16-year-old songwriter had written a few years earlier. This documentary ranks Janis Ian alongside Bob Dylan and Joan Baez as one of the leading voices of a new generation. The story is captivating, but the structure and visual style are less daring or adventurous than Janis Ian's.
