Het Muziekmedicijn plot

"People don't just want to sing "Kortjakje" (Short Jacket) with a volunteer; sometimes they need a serious opera aria," says Maartje de Lint, singer and trainer. It's a remarkable phenomenon: dementia patients, whose memory (and sometimes speech as well) are severely impaired, can often flawlessly sing along to a song from their past. Through this singing, they briefly regain their language skills, and often all sorts of memories as well.

After a 30-year career as an opera singer, Maartje de Lint discovered that her music can revive people with early-stage Alzheimer's. A conversation with a mother and her daughter suffering from Alzheimer's inspired Maartje to dedicate herself to singing for people with early-stage Alzheimer's and their caregivers, sharing her "music medicine" with them. This documentary documents the short-term effects of these gatherings, as well as the long-term implications for the patient and their immediate family. The value of music for people with Alzheimer's is undeniable, but once that message has been hammered home, Van der Linden has little more to add.
