This film exceeded my expectations! Oppressive atmosphere, suspenseful music. Cinematographically it could have been a bit better, but oh well. I had clammy hands every now and then, and that says something. Especially the fact that you didn't know if the doll was pretending to sleep or was actually asleep. Or playing dead or not. The fact that it is apparently a low-budget film does not detract from the quality. In fact, there are plenty of films that have had a larger budget invested in them that are nowhere near as good as this one, where the suspense was, in my opinion, very present.

Recommended if you like thrilling slasher films, without real depth to the story or characters.

Dolls are scary! And especially when they're made of porcelain. That must have been what the makers thought with this film, and so you get a hefty dose of sick dolls on screen; it's grainy and a bit 70s-era, which these makers are fans of, and rightly so. They clearly drew inspiration from horror classics of that era, such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Hills Have Eyes, I Spit on Your Grave, and all their pulpy imitators. So, a creepy forest, a creepy house, and a creepy killer with a doll's face. The familiar hysterical laugh from the victim after enduring so much filth is also present. There is quite a bit of gore, but that is not where the film excels. It is more the morbid atmosphere that creates the horror here, and it does that quite well.

Unsuspecting hikers encounter a woman in the middle of the woods who has covered her face with a doll's head. She makes an aggressive impression, lives in a small cabin in the woods furnished like a dollhouse, and is clearly not right in the head. Dolly is a slasher in which a doll-woman is responsible for mutilation, murder, and mayhem. The film seems inspired by horror from the 70s: Texas Chainsaw Massacre and other slashers featuring masked killers roaming the streets. Grimly visualized and quite brutal. Not Terrifier-brutal, but 70s brutal. So far, so good.

But then. The story is predictable and essentially limited to the hunter-prey motif. A motif that repeats itself and is rather drawn out. I didn't find it very exciting or atmospheric. Besides the predictable plot, my patience was tested by the killing doll woman. I didn't find her particularly creepy. Rather quite annoying. She is played, by the way, by Max The Impaler, who appears to be a non-binary wrestler. Oh well, anything for cult status and an immediate reason to bring out Dolly II. I sincerely hope that any reason is lacking.

Dolly is not a good movie. Not suspenseful, very drawn out, and no impressive killer. Technically, the film looks good. The effects are okay. There is no shortage of gore and blood. A successful wink here and there. Quite fun, but all in all, not enough to get particularly excited about.
