Komedie Elahi plot
Bahram is a 40-year-old filmmaker who has made films in Turkish-Azerbaijani throughout his career, none of which have ever been screened in Iran. His latest work, once again rejected by the Ministry of Culture, pushes him to his limits. With his astute Vespa-riding producer Sadaf at his side, he embarks on an underground mission to show his film to an Iranian audience—dodging government censorship, absurd bureaucracy, and his own doubts.

This is a film about film – more precisely: about film censorship in Iran – and usually I like meta-films, but this one is just really bad. A film director travels all over Tehran looking for an opportunity to screen his banned film anyway – in that respect, the film resembles his earlier Ta Farda (20220), in which the story consists of nothing but endless dragging around a baby that has to be hidden from the mother's parents – but nowhere does the film become interesting or witty. I think the film is intended as a comedy (the title, by the way, refers to Dante's Divine Comedy: I think his film has died and is now traveling through the underworld where we occasionally encounter another film or something) and the protagonist looks like the Iranian imitation of Woody Allen, but the film is not funny anywhere. They should ban the screening of this far too bad film in the Netherlands.

In this free adaptation of Dante Alighieri's 14th-century allegorical epic, Iranian filmmaker Bahram Ark attempts to obtain a permit to screen his latest film. This screening is a condition for securing funding for his new film project. Lead actor Sadaf Asgari drives him around on a moped to the conversations that put his ideals to the test. Occasionally amusing, Asgari's choice to film the conversations in continuous takes with a static camera makes this visually unappealing. The conversations seem to last an eternity, and the dry humor is insufficiently conveyed. Asgari (who is not present at the conversations) provides some life to the party, but the film is easily stolen by Shila 'the fantastic dog' in the ironic final scene.
