Anyone who hears the name Xaviera Hollander may know her from her high-profile television appearances, the legendary book "The Happy Hooker," or her role during the sexual revolution. But behind the public image lies a woman with a remarkable life story: a feminist pioneer, LGBTQIA+ advocate, and survivor of a Japanese internment camp. In this documentary, director Barbara Makkinga follows Xaviera's life in and around Xaviera's Happy House on Stadionweg in Amsterdam.

Vera de Vries, AKA Xavier Hollander, is in her eighties and physically declining, but her mind is still sharp and her humour and zest for life are still intact. She recently wrote several books, including ones about growing old and the impact that the Second World War (she was born in the Japanese camp Tji-Deng in what was then Surabaya) had on her personal development. Suitable as an introduction to a liberated icon of female sexuality, but for those reasonably familiar with Den Hollander's background this is more of a promo for her bibliography.
