A truly charming debut film. "River" (2022) still feels a little too often like the work of a young director searching for his own style and tone. Some things work out exceptionally well, such as the nihilistic friendship between the introverted River (Ian Ghysels) and the dominant Donny (Gauthier Deleersnijder). A grimy, grimy sketch of West Flemish fringe figures who drag each other into a downward spiral of drugs, sexual frustration, and toxic masculinity. It crackles when Ghysels and Deleersnijder are on screen together, especially when the mentally damaged Zoë (Manon Soberon) comes between them. It's a shame that "River" (2022) chooses the most insipid route possible when River and Donny actually turn out to be the same person. Since 'Fight Club' (1999) it has become such a forced trick That doesn't mean I won't keep an eye on future work by Laurenzo Vergeynst.
