Due to discrimination based on his heritage, Polish Jan Bojarski [Reda Kateb] is unable to sell his inventions in France after World War II. In desperation, he decides to use his technical ingenuity to get rich illegally. He develops a method to counterfeit French banknotes. He travels the entire country to prevent Commissioner Mattéi [Bastien Bouillon] from discovering where the banknotes are being made.Because he is away from home so often, his marriage to Suzanne [Sara Giraudeau] comes under immense pressure. It doesn't help that Jan just can't bring himself to end it. This adaptation of a true story is both an amusing cat-and-mouse game and a poignant marital drama. Kateb is charismatic and nuanced in the lead role, but Pierre Lottin is a little too transparent as Bojarski's reckless best friend Anton. The epilogue is hilarious.

This is a delightful piece of craftsmanship. Jean-Paul Salomé's previous film La Syndicaliste also stood out for its great craftsmanship and was more than worth watching, but this is just a little bit better. (I also find 'Jean-Paul Salomé' to be a name that exudes solidity.)
It is an old-school crime thriller. So the pace isn't too high, and everything is set up very methodically and solidly. That fits this film very well with the cat-and-mouse game between the brilliant and therefore very precise counterfeiter Jan "My banknotes are more beautiful than those of the Banque de France" Bojarski (Reda Kateb) and Commissioner Mattéi (Bastien Bouillon), the man who receives all the country's scorn for failing to catch the culprit. This is the role Alain Delon would have played if this really were a film from 1976 and not one that feels that way. Bouillon also looks good in a double-breasted suit and puffs away his cigarettes just as enthusiastically, but of course, no one can look as aggrieved and yet be as "très cool" as Delon. I always appreciate that narrative style, where you constantly switch back and forth between the perpetrator and the police.
The story of Bojarski's marriage to his wife Suzanne (Sara Giraudeau), to whom he tells nothing, is also given ample room to develop. How it develops is, however, somewhat predictable.
There is even room for a funny subplot in which Bojarski, under his guise of an inventor, actually makes all kinds of amazing inventions.
The film also looks absolutely stunning. The way the robbery in the opening scene is filmed immediately draws you in.

Good film about a master forger who manages to put counterfeit money into circulation for years. A true-story and entertaining crime drama set in the 1950s. It might take a while for the film to really get going, but it gets better and better as it goes on. A few suspenseful moments and interesting to see how the counterfeit money is made. Easily 3.5 stars.
