During the closing credits, a large portion of the cast makes an explicit plea for empathy and support for the 2.5 million homeless people (half of whom are children) in the US in this well-intentioned, but woefully written and directed, social drama. Lauren [Isabella Ferreira] loses her mother at a young age and is abruptly thrown out onto the streets by her foster mother after graduating from high school. She finds a new family in a homeless encampment that Robert [William Baldwin], deeply in debt, wants to demolish to build luxury housing. In reality, homeless people have a complex history, but Verdin reduces that to a few melodramatic scenes, making the characters merely superficial archetypes. She also romanticizes the homeless experience by portraying them as a close-knit family. The acting is not bad, and the presence of veteran Beverly D'Angelo and pop star Ashanti is interesting.
