Ramsden, Yorkshire, 1916. Most of the men in the ambitious local choir, including the leader, have volunteered for the front. Under the leadership of the demanding, driven Dr. Guthrie, the choir recruits a group of teenage boys and girls. Together they discover the joy of singing and the urgency of desire, while the new boys come to terms with their impending military service.

I don't know why Moviemeter categorizes this film as a comedy, because it is not a comedy at all. This film is set during the First World War in a small English village, but young soldiers are being called up while mourning telegrams are being issued for fallen soldiers. The composition of a choir serves as the central theme, and its conductor is no stranger to the scene and has a fondness for German composers.
All in all, not a masterpiece, but certainly worth watching, especially since it doesn't play excessively on sentiment.
What did bother me, though, was the incredibly beautiful setting... brand-new streets, a train that looked like it came straight out of the car wash... I suspect AI designed a large part of the brushed-over scenery.
I cannot imagine that a factory town in the English countryside looked so pristine more than 100 years ago.

In the run-up to the 1916 Christmas recital, the choirmaster [Thomas Hoews] of a British village choir enlists for military service. The board, led by Alderman and financier Duxbury [Roger Allam], manages to persuade Dr. Henry Guthrie [Ralph Fiennes] to take over the direction, despite his ties to Germany and a few “peculiarities.” Due to a combination of a shortage of members and the prevailing antipathy towards all things German, the traditional St Matthew Passion is dropped in favor of 'The Dream of Gerontius' by British composer Sir Edward Elgar [Simon Russell Beale]. Although the trailer suggests otherwise, this is certainly not a comedy, but a cleverly written, deeply layered, and often moving cross-section of a traumatized generation. It also demonstrates the healing power of music without descending into sentimentality. The subtle humor and the acting of the impressive cast contribute to this.

A nice film in which the choir in Yorkshire is thinned out due to the war. The film is set during the First World War and the entire set design looks beautiful. The community in which the film takes place is also well portrayed. However, the story and characters are portrayed a bit too tamely, and you have to like the music as well.
