La Folle Aventure de Louis de Funès plot

Behind the blundering and irascible personas that made Louis de Funès famous in the 1960s, there was a modest and timid actor. In the documentary La Folle Aventure de Louis de Funès (The Crazy Adventures of Louis de Funès), Lucie Cariès draws on personal archives, family videos, and interviews to portray the French comedian. De Funès's greatest successes came with his role as gendarme Ludovic Cruchot in Le Gendarme de Saint-Tropez and its five sequels, as well as with the comedy war film La Grande Vadrouille (The Great War).

A standard documentary, but since I don't know much about Louis de Funès's background, this was interesting. I know the man primarily as a busy comedian, who was also a popular figure on Belgian television back in the day. Perhaps also because of de Funès himself, because we also learn that he was a right-wing conservative.

The beginning of the documentary is the most interesting. It tells the story of how de Funès grew up, but also broke through relatively late. And then there are the differences with, for example, Bourvil and Yves Montand, although they clicked well professionally and provided the necessary humor on the big screen. In the latter part, the documentary falls somewhat flat, and there's little new to discover. The documentary isn't particularly special creatively, but it's interesting enough for film buffs.
