Un Poeta plot

Oscar Restrepo's obsession with poetry has not brought him glory. Older and erratic, he has succumbed to the cliché of the poet in the shadows. Meeting Yurlady, a teenager from humble origins, brings some light to his last days. He teaches her to read and write poetry, but guiding her into the world of poets may not be the right way.

The tragedy (in three acts) of the Colombian poet Oscar Restrepo [Ubeimar Rios], once a promising talent, now a middle-aged man embittered by unfulfilled ambitions, strained family ties, and what he sees as the commercialization of art in general. He finds a chance for redemption when he discovers the poetry of teenager Yurlady [Rebeca Andrade]. He imposes himself as her mentor and introduces her to his network of poets. They are enthusiastic, but to Oscar’s horror, the organizers of a poetry event want to mold Yurlady into something that (according to them) appeals more to the public. Soto makes short work of the elitist art world and the commercialization of “art.” Rios shines as a fundamentally likeable loser, who allows himself to be blinded (also) by his own craving for recognition at the expense of the down-to-earth and modest. The poets' convention is the comic highlight in this razor-sharp, often hilarious tragicomic satire.
