Possibly because there is no nobility in the United States, the real or alleged European aristocracy is often a valuable subject for Hollywood comedies. This is also the case in this satirical rom-com about a penniless American woman who wanders through Paris with only a glittering evening dress and almost automatically ends up in the highest, snobbish circles.

With Claudette Colbert, John Barrymore, Don Ameche and Mary Astor on board, you know that there will be little to criticize in terms of the acting and especially the timing. Made a bit routine perhaps by director Mitchell Leisen, but an enjoyable pastime nonetheless.

Claudette Colbert plays Eve Peabody, a free-spirited woman who, however, has no money in her pocket when she meets taxi driver Tibor Czerny [Don Ameche]. Eve decides to pose as Countess Czerny, but when George Flammarion [John Barrymore] discovers her lie, he uses her to drive a wedge between his wife Helene [Mary Astor], who has become a bit too good friends with slippery (and much younger) Jacques Picot [Francis Lederer]. So all the elements for a screwball comedy are present and the cast puts its best foot forward. However, the duo of Charles Brackett and Billy Wilder would deliver even better works and Midnight lacks the fast pace of the absolute masterpieces in the genre.

Amusing comedy in which Colbert is allowed to show her comic talent and succeeds very well.
