Sixty-year-old movie star Jay Kelly (George Clooney) has always prioritized his career. This has cost him several marriages and also complicated his relationship with his children. While waiting for his next film, he unexpectedly accepts an invitation to a film festival in Tuscany, where he could receive a lifetime achievement award. A good excuse to follow his youngest daughter (Grace Edwards) on her trip through France, but a problem for his manager (Adam Sandler), who also struggles with work-life balance. "Nothing is as hard as playing yourself," Jay says at one point. Yet Clooney plays his role in a way that stays true to his public image, without irony or shyness. Sandler is every bit as good as the manager who considers himself Jay's best friend and yearns for recognition. Baumbach wastes no time in this intelligent, entertaining dissection of a movie star's life. Supporting roles include co-writer Emily Mortimer, Laura Dern, Jim Broadbent, Patrick Wilson and Greta Gerwig.

An excellent film about a famous Hollywood actor who is confronted with his past when he runs into an old friend. An original story with a beautifully portrayed and captivating lead character (George Clooney's perfect casting completes the picture). A cast with quite a few familiar names and simply all great scenes. I can understand this not being everyone's cup of tea, but it is mine.

A melodrama about the life of an actor and his company, who control everything. You see all the negativity that comes with such a life. Both the suffering an actor must endure, and the sacrifices those around him must make.

What you see may be true, but all the positive aspects have been deliberately omitted here. This creates a "dark" side of life. Which, in reality, will be quite different.

Nevertheless, it resonates with me, and I'm full of praise for George Clooney as the actor. The supporting role of his personal assistant, who also has his own problems, is played by Adam Sandler. What he goes through affects me, but I've never really been fond of this actor. He's good at times, but at other times he continues to unnerve me. He's not bad, but I'm still left with mixed feelings about Adam. He'll never be my favorite.

It is noticeable that George is getting older, but he remains a top-charming actor.

The film relies heavily on dialogue, which can be quite profound at times. So know what you're getting into with this film. I personally enjoy such genres. It has some story and substance, in my opinion.

Another fun anecdote:

A supporting actor on the train saw a face I couldn't place. It was a Dutch racing driver (orange shirt and racing bike). I knew this actor from somewhere and really wanted to know where. After some searching, I discovered it was Ferdi Stofmeel, whom I knew from the comedy sketches "Komt een man bij de dokter" (A Man Visits the Doctor). You might wonder how this ended up in this production. But because it was a Dutchman, I didn't expect it in this American production...

Considering the 'original' story, I give this movie 4*
