De Surinaamse Voetbaldroom plot

When Dean Gorré gets the chance to become national coach of the national football team of his native country Suriname, he grabs it with both hands. However, upon arrival in Suriname, he encounters a different standard than he is used to from his professional past. The team's dedication is great, but the resources to perform top-class leave much to be desired. And in the meantime, Gorré tries to get Surinamese pros who play football in the Netherlands to play for the Surinamese team. With unprecedented energy, perseverance and a good dose of diplomacy, Dean Gorré does everything he can to put Surinamese football on the map.

For decades, Suriname was one of the smallest football dwarfs. Ruud Gullit, Frank Rijkaard, Edgar Davids and Clarence Seedorf all have Surinamese roots, but due to a decision at the time of Suriname's independence, it was not possible for a long time to let children of Surinamese parents who were born abroad play for the Netherlands. Due to a twist of fate, Dean Gorré was not with the 'colourful team' when it died in a plane crash in 1989. That disaster is one of the reasons why Gorré decided to become the national coach of Suriname and to campaign for an amendment to the law that would also allow players born outside Suriname to join the team. It is not only a fight against bureaucracy, but also against a mentality that is deeply rooted in Surinamese culture. In this documentary, Gorré looks back on his period as coach and on the first steps that were taken to put Suriname on the international map as a football country. Many dryly filmed, talking heads and unimaginative editing make this not as inspiring as it could have been.
