Deaf President Now! plot

"The revolution that refused to be silenced."

In March 1988, Gallaudet University was the only deaf university in the world. However, never in its 124-year history had there been a deaf president. When the board again chose a hearing candidate for the position, a civil rights movement emerged among the student body with the slogan "Deaf President Now!" This documentary takes a look at the tumultuous eight days of 1988 when four students sought a way to start a revolution and change history forever.

124 years after the founding of Gallaudet University, the only university for the deaf in the world, its board is still made up entirely of hearing people. In 1988, students revolted when the board rejected two suitable deaf candidates for the position of president in favor of Elisabeth Sinser, a nurse with no experience or knowledge of the deaf world. The protest became world news and a historic moment in the struggle for the emancipation of people with disabilities. The four leaders of the protest reflect on this period. The performance of board chair Jane Bassett Spillman (in archival footage) is shocking, but typical of the time. DiMarco and Guggenheim are forced to film reconstructions of moments not captured on film in a purely cinematic way. A captivating story with charismatic, enthusiastic narrators who emphasize that people with disabilities are perfectly capable of taking care of themselves, even at the administrative level.
